Patricia Anahory

Arquitecta pelo Boston Architectural College (EUA) e mestre em arquitectura pela Princeton University (EUA). Na sua tese de licenciatura, trabalhou a questão de género, sociedade de controlo e arquitectura, com o trabalho “Reframing the Body: A Women´s Prison”. No mestrado, apresentou o “Homing Landscapes: Mapping Memory[al]-Dakar, sobre a questão da construção e reconstrução de memoria e identidade nas suas traduções arquitectónicas. Trabalhou, vários anos, em diversos ateliers de arquitectura e design em Nova Iorque e tem feito projectos próprios de arquitectura em diversos países (EUA, Cabo Verde e Gana), merecendo destaque a sua participação no livro Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century Contemporary World Architecture Atlas da Arquitectura do Século XXI (publicado na Inglaterra), com um projecto residencial em Cabo Verde. Ganhou o prémio de arquitectura Rotch Fellowship, que possibilitou uma pesquisa em arquitectura africana, tendo viajado durante 14 meses por diversos países do continente (Senegal, Mali, Etiópia, Quénia e Tanzânia, entre outros). Actualmente é directora do Centro de Investigação em Desenvolvimento Local e Ordenamento de Território da Universidade de Cabo Verde.

Holds a Masters Degree in Architecture from Princeton University (USA). Her  thesis questioned the presupposed relationships of place and identity by reconsidering associations of body-ground-memory-identity-home-land in the re-evaluation of the concept of memory [re]construction and its architectural translation, the memorial. Her other academic work has addressed the social and spatial definitions of boundaries in articulation with issues of gender, society of control and architecture.

She worked several years in architecture and design offices in New York and has completed independent architecture and design projects in the USA, Cape Verde and Ghana. One of her residential projects is featured in the 2008 book Phaidon Atlas of Architecture of XXI Century World Architecture. In 2000 she was awarded the prestigious Rotch Traveling Fellowship which allowed her to travel extensively throughout the African continent researching relationship between architecture and identity.

She is currently serving as director of the Centro de Investigação em Desenvolvimento Local e Ordenamento de Território at the University of Cape Verde, an emerging research center addressing the dynamics of land settlement and rapid urban growth in the country/Africa.
